Know BEFORE You Go!

  • CHECK YOUR PASSPORT - If your passport expires in 6 months or less on your departure date, you will NOT be allowed to board the plane.


  • Get vaccinated!
    • Yellow Fever is the only required vaccination to enter Kenya.
    • Malaria prescription taken daily.
    • All other recommended vaccinations are optional.

PRO TIP: When possible, arrive before noon then stay up until near-normal bedtime to avoid jetlag.

What to expect when you arrive

  • Tumaini Staff will greet you right outside baggage claim.


  • After dark arrivals stay at a local Nairobi hotel and depart for Masii in the morning.


  • Bring US currency ($100 bills preferred) for extra excursions, dining or shopping outside TKGH.
  • Stay at Tumaini Kilimanjaro Guest House includes board
  • Power adapters have been converted to US voltage
  • Bring your own personal care items
  • Water bottles provided / bring your own refillable bottle

What to expect if you go to the coast


  • Send passport information to Tumaini - name, number and expiration date
  • Fly Jambo Jet NBO to MBA - 1 hour 15 minutes, ~ $150 USD

Extra Excursions

Do it all in ONE DAY

  1. Nairobi National Park - early morning visit (Non-resident rate $43 Adult / $22 child
  2. Elephant Orphanage - daily one hour visit 11:00 - 12:00 - $20 per person
  3. Giraffe Centre - open 9:00 to 5:00 PM (Non-resident rate 1,500 Ksh (about $12 USD)
  4. Stop at Java House for American style lunch and tourist shopping at the market.

What to Pack

PRO TIP: Pack 2 changes of clothes and toiletry essentials in your carry on


  • Women: Pants, jeans, knee-length skirts or dresses are appropriate.
  • Men: Pants or jeans and casual shirts are appropriate. Shorts can be worn mostly around TKGH.
  • Walk shoes and sandals are all you need. Flip Flops are fine around TKGH.
  • Hat or baseball cap
  • Light-weight jacket


  • Toiletries - shampoo, conditioner, hair dryer, sunscreen, deet bug spray, medications


  • Snacks - granola or protein bars, grab and go snacks, any other must haves


  • A word about bringing gifts - Too many of the same item in your suitcase can be a problem as your luggage is scanned at the airport. Food gift packs are available for purchase and extras can be bought locally and help the local markets.
